The engineering design world has spoken: there’s need for 2D and 3D CAD software for the foreseeable future. I personally thought that 2D design will succumb to 3D design only as a paradigm shift in the engineering world was taking place.
That still remains true, 3D design is the way of the future. However, I believe that 2D design still has an important role to play for the next many years before it gives way to total 3D design. The reason for this is that many facilities are very old and they still rely on 2D drawings that need to be updated. Also, many of the senior designers still feel they can be more productive doing things the way they learned design: 2D. Add to that the fact that 2D design software is very easy to deploy vis-à-vis 3D.
